Returning Home

Sam returned home on the "Colby Victory," one of the famous "victory ships" of the time. In 1946 it was sold to the Holland American Line and was renamed the "Axeldijk." In 1963 it was again sold, this time to Liberia, and was renamed the "Monique."

Sam was very moved by a visit to the World War II Memorial during his last visit to Washington to see Sabra and David in October, 2004. After visiting the memorial David sat down with dad at the computer and registered him in the honoree book online. It seemed to mean a great deal to him.

At about this time David asked Sam to write down some of the details of his life experience in a book made for this purpose. Sam typed most of it out on the computer instead, and if you click here you can read what he wrote.

He did a slide presentation about it that he

showed to various groups in Wilmington.

Sam and Ruby were part of a group of friends that brought

dinner and ate together monthly at the yacht club.
